Beta Reading Services
As an author myself, I know how important it can be to have an outside perspective on your book. When you’re immersed in the world and characters you’ve created, things that seem obvious to you may be lost to the reader on the page.
This is where a Beta reader comes in . . .
Why is Andie the person I should entrust my story to?
I’ve been an avid reader my entire life, and I know the elements that make a good story. Since the pandemic, I’ve pretty much read nothing but romance, averaging around 200 books a year.
I write romance, I’m part of a romance writing group, I listen to podcasts on romance, and I read books about writing romance.
My life is immersed in the world of romance, and I can read a book and pick up on what is and is not working. Are the characters developed enough? Is the tone even throughout? How is the pacing? Can I feel them falling in love? All questions I’ll be asking as I read your draft!
“Andie gave detailed, specific feedback that I could immediately implement as an author. She identified places in the manuscript that needed more development and gave suggestions of what might help the prose. She even identified quotes that stood out, something that will be helpful to me in marketing. Most importantly, she read like a romance author and reader; my story is much stronger for having her read it. I highly recommend her services!”
—Ginny B. Moore, Historical Romance Author of the Flower Sisters series
“Andie has a great eye for character development, pacing, and detail. She’s careful and thorough, and she fully engages with the author’s vision and voice. Her feedback is clear, encouraging, and complete, and she tells me in the most constructive and supportive way what’s working, and what’s not. Frankly, I don’t trust anything I’ve written until I run it by Andie first. Whether you’ve polished till your eyes are crossing or you hand her something raw and bleeding, I can say with confidence that Andie will handle your words with care”
—Misty Urban, Historical Romance Author of the Ladies Least Likely series
If I work with Andie, what will I get?
I’ll read your manuscript draft and email you my thoughts in an editorial assessment letter. I’m looking at the big picture when it comes to your story and will analyze characters, plot, pacing, and structure. I’ll highlight what’s working well in the book and what you can lean into, as well as providing suggestions for ways to make the story stronger.
I’ll also pull quotes from the manuscript that are strong and assemble them in a document for you to use during promotion of your novel.
What you won’t get from me are in line notes, research checks, or a sensitivity read. I won’t specifically address your writing style unless I feel it could enhance your story (eg. single vs. dual POV as appropriate for your genre), and I will not address your grammar (always use a copy editor for this specifically!).
"Andie’s feedback on my manuscript was thorough, encouraging, honest and constructive. She asked thought-provoking questions about my characters that helped me give them much more dimension. She also pointed out a few small plot holes I missed, making everything much more professional and cohesive. With her help, this manuscript eventually won me a place in the SmoochPit mentorship program for romance writing."
—Adaline D. Wright, Contemporary Romance Writer and SmoochPit Mentee
How much will this cost?
I charge $1.00 per 1k words. If your book is 63.2k words, it will cost you $63.00, if it is 86.8k words, it will be $87.00, etc.
How long will this take?
You will receive your editorial letter and pulled quotes within two weeks of delivery of your manuscript. If you need it sooner, we can negotiate. A rush fee may apply.
What if I just want to chat?
I’m happy to do a zoom call for $25.00. This is great if you just need to run ideas by someone and are not yet ready to share a draft.
Will you read my other books?
If you need me to read additional books for context, we can negotiate a price based on length of the book, and how many works, but generally it will be $25.00 per book
When will I pay?
I’ll send you an invoice when you book a space for half of the fee; this should be paid on delivery of your manuscript. An invoice for the remaining balance will be sent once I return your editorial assessment letter.
How should I book you?
Send me an email through the form below and let me know in the message section when you are hoping to book an assessment or zoom call. I’ll get back to you as soon as possible with my availability and to answer any questions you may have.
"I sent Andie a copy of my manuscript for her feedback and was blown away with her insight. Her critiques and comments were kind and thoughtful, yet she did not hold back. Andie's feedback was thorough, showing where changes would improve scenes, and would enhance the readers experience. Thanks to her I feel that my manuscript has improved beyond measure. I would recommend her services to anyone looking to get something a little more than what a traditional beta reader would offer."
